[NEW YORK CITY.] Either, I’m just amazing with my job at giving designers specific directions to follow or I’m just in-tune with the same creative vibrations as Greg Lauren. Perhaps even both, if you could recall the last review I wrote Greg Lauren SS16 where I mentioned two things one being that Lauren’s collection should be in a presentation instead of a traditional runway. Only to appreciate the finer details up-close and personal rather than a quick glance from afar. Secondly, I mentioned a wish for Lauren to start a Rugged Training Workshop simply because his models were very tough yet remained effortlessly beautiful. Those two thoughts became a reality at the most talked about FW16 showcase in New York City.
It was like walking into a dream, really, it was. First, we had to wait outside and we all grew impatient. Thankfully, I was part of the press I got to go in before the masses. Right when I passed the black curtains my sight seemed hazy for a moment – I recognized that we were in some warehouse with very dim lighting then I noticed models standing on soapboxes and then I turned opposite of my left. Boom, there it was, the center piece – a boxing ring. Two models inside throwing a few practice jabs at one another and then a bloke at ground level drenched in sweat, jumping rope. Once I pieced it together, I knew I had to run to the back corner as fast as I could to beat the crowd and work my way backwards to the front.
Uhh, Lauren has done it yet again – he’s made an honest woman out of me. How does he do it?! How on Earth does he get the hottest male models know to man?! Who does he think he is?! He’s down-right fowl for putting together such desirable-ingenious clothing that I’d wear intentionally in front of kanye and tell mister west “You. Could. Never.” This collection was also a trip back in time; think classic huckleberry fin meshed perfectly with Cinderella Man. Now, throw in Doctor Victor Frankenstein because Lauren continues to dissect fabrics and hack them together with other textures to create a functional masterpiece. Okay, so yes there’s a little holes and rips and a lot of this and that but come on there’s a lot of layers, a lot of ivory, a lot of green and enough denim to make the gold rush jealous. Quite frankly, if I were to rob a bank the first place I’d shop would be greglauren.com – hell hopefully I’m robbing the bank wearing Greg Lauren to buy more Greg Lauren.
